Success Stories

Combating Caustic Burns in Children:

Jonah came to the US from the Dominican Republic at age 4 in 2015 with caustic burn injuries.  He lived with his mother and was referred to Healing the Children’s Rocky Mountain Chapter.  During his stay in the US, he lived with Ann and Ryan Brown, the chapter directors.

His injuries were so severe that he needed a gastric pull-up to help. The gastric pull-up procedure, also known as gastric transposition, is a surgical technique used to replace a damaged or diseased esophagus with a portion of the stomach.

Thankfully, the procedure was successful, and Jonah was soon able to drink and eat normally.  Once he was able to swallow normally, he was offered an array of food items to taste.  After much debate, he determined he preferred apple juice.

Today, in the DR, thanks to outreach and education efforts, the reports of caustic burns in children is significantly reduced.
